The water sample, potassium dichromate digestion solution, silver sulfate solution containing catalyst, and concentrated sulfuric acid are mixed. After heating at 165°C, potassium dichromate ions oxidize organic matter, triggering a colorimetric change. The analyzer detects this color change and converts it into a COD value output- the consumed amount of potassium dichromate ions is equivalent to the oxidizable organic matter quantity. Chloride ions, as the main interfering substance, are eliminated by adding mercuric sulfate.
