The gas being measured (flue gas) enters the flue gas side of the zirconia oxygen sensor through a filter, while the other side of the sensor is continuously supplied with reference gas (clean, dry, oil-free instrument gas, defaults to containing 20.6% oxygen). The difference in oxygen concentration between the sample and reference oxygen sensors enables the measurement of oxygen concentration in the flue gas.
