Two Significant Technical Advantages Of Fm Cw Radar Level Meter

Sep 03, 2024|

There are two main types of radar level transmitters on the market. One is a high-frequency radar level meter, whose transmission frequency is usually in the range of 24 to 26 GHz. The other is a fm cw radar level meter, whose frequency is generally above 78 GHz or 80 GHz. The frequency-modulated continuous wave radar level meter has two significant characteristics. Let's take a look at them together.

Advantages of FM CW radar

1. Stronger focusing ability. The transmission angle of the fm cw radar level meter is directly related to the speed of light, the effective cross-sectional area of the antenna, and the frequency. Under normal circumstances, under the premise that the cross-sectional area of the antenna remains unchanged, the higher the transmission frequency, the smaller the transmission angle, and vice versa. Therefore, the smaller the transmission angle of the frequency-modulated continuous wave radar level meter, the stronger the focusing ability, the stronger the echo signal, and the more accurate the measurement result. In contrast, the frequency-modulated continuous wave radar level meter has a stronger focusing ability and a more stable echo signal.

2. Wider dynamic range. The dynamic range refers to the difference between the strongest echo signal and the weakest echo signal detected by the fm cw radar level meter. Generally speaking, the dynamic range of a high-frequency radar level meter is around 96dB, while the dynamic range of an 80 GHz radar level transmitter can reach 120dB. The size of the dynamic range reflects the radar level meter's ability to detect the strength of the signal, that is, the larger the dynamic range, the stronger the ability to detect weak signals. Since the radar waves emitted by the radar level meter are affected by the dielectric constant of the medium, the larger the dielectric constant, the stronger the echo signal. High-frequency radar level meters have better measurement effects on media with a dielectric constant greater than 2, while fm cw radar level meters can measure media with a dielectric constant greater than 1.1.
