The Difference Between Ultrasonic Liquid Level Measurement And Radar Type Water Level Sensor

Sep 25, 2023|

Liquid level measurement plays a vital role in the industrial field, and in liquid level measurement technology, ultrasonic liquid level measurement and radar water level sensor measurement are two common methods. Each of them has unique characteristics and applicable scenarios, and the differences between them will be introduced in detail below.

Ultrasonic and radar liquid level measurement

Technical principle: Ultrasonic water level sensor measurement uses the speed of sound waves propagating in the medium and the principle of reflection. The transmitter emits a high-frequency sound wave pulse, and after passing through the medium, the reflected sound wave signal is received by the receiver, and the liquid level position is determined by calculating the propagation time of the sound wave.

Radar type water level sensor measurement uses the propagation characteristics of microwave signals in air and liquid media for measurement. The radar transmitter emits a microwave signal, which is reflected by the liquid surface, and the reflected signal is received by the receiver. The position of the liquid level is obtained by calculating the round-trip time of the microwave signal.

Applicable media: Ultrasonic water level sensors are suitable for non-viscous, non-foaming liquid media in most cases, such as water, acid-base solutions, etc. It has less impact on liquid components and has a wide range of applications.

Radar water level sensors are not limited by the properties of the medium and can be applied to various liquid media, including corrosive liquids, viscous liquids, and media with particles.

Measuring range: Ultrasonic water level transmitters are usually suitable for small and medium-sized liquid level measurements. Their measuring range is generally short and suitable for small containers or scenarios that require higher accuracy.

Radar water level sensors can be applied to a wide range of liquid level measurements. The measurement range can reach tens of meters or even hundreds of meters, which is suitable for large storage tanks or scenarios with high liquid level changes.

Environmental impact: Ultrasonic liquid level measurement is relatively sensitive to temperature and pressure changes, because the speed of sound changes at different temperatures and pressures, which may have a certain impact on the measurement results.

Radar type water level sensor have relatively little impact on temperature and pressure. The propagation speed of microwave signals in air and liquid is less affected by temperature and pressure and has higher stability.

There are obvious differences between ultrasonic liquid level measurement and radar liquid level measurement in terms of technical principles, applicable media, measurement range and environmental impact. When choosing an appropriate liquid level measurement method, you need to make a selection based on the needs and conditions in the actual application scenario.
