Among all non contact type measuring instruments, radar and ultrasonic level meters are two widely used devices. So, what is the difference between these two level meters? What are their respective advantages? Today, we will delve into the characteristics of these two non contact type level sensors.

Non-contact liquid level sensor

Ultrasound refers to sound waves with frequencies higher than 20kHz. It has the characteristics of high frequency, short wavelength, small diffraction, good directivity, and directional propagation. It has strong penetrating ability in liquids and solids, especially in opaque solids, and the length can reach tens of meters. When ultrasonic waves encounter interfaces or impurities, significant reflection will occur. This characteristic is used for level measurement.

 

Ultrasonic instruments convert electrical energy into ultrasonic waves, emit and receive returned ultrasonic waves through an ultrasonic transducer (probe), and finally convert them into level signals. Similar to ultrasonic level meters, radar level meters also use a transmit-reflect-receive working mode, but the difference is that ultrasonic waves mainly use ultrasonic transducers and use mechanical waves, while radar level meters rely on high-frequency heads and Antennas that use ultra-high frequency electromagnetic waves.

 

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these two non contact type measuring instruments?

1. The measurement accuracy of radar level meter is higher than that of ultrasonic level meter.

2. The radar antenna is smaller and easier to install.

3. Radar has a higher frequency, shorter wavelength, and better reflection effect on tilted solids.

4. The blind zone of radar is smaller than that of ultrasonic waves.

5. Compared with ultrasonic waves, the beam angle of radar is smaller and the energy is more concentrated. Therefore, while enhancing the echo capability, it is easier to avoid interference and the measurement accuracy is higher.

6. Compared with ultrasonic level meters that use mechanical waves, radar level meters are less susceptible to environmental changes.

Radar level gauges seem to have the advantage. But this does not mean that ultrasonic level meters will be eliminated. Ultrasonic level meters also have their own unique advantages, the most important of which is that the cost is much lower than that of radar level meters. Therefore, when interference is small and accuracy requirements are not high, ultrasonic level meters are more cost-effective.
