How To Protect Radar Level Gauges From Hydrofluoric Acid Corrosion: Sealing And Material Selection

Sep 11, 2024|

Nitric acid and sulfuric acid are well-known corrosive media, but hydrofluoric acid is less well known. Hydrofluoric acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogen fluoride gas with a pungent odor. Although it is a weak acid, it is extremely corrosive and can corrode metals, glass and silicon-containing objects.

Hydrofluoric acid measurement

When choosing a corrosion-resistant radar level gauge with hydrofluoric acid, the key lies in the choice of antenna. Choose a corrosion-resistant physical sealed antenna to prevent hydrofluoric acid from corroding the antenna through the gap, resulting in measurement failure. The bottom of the antenna must be completely sealed without any gaps where hydrofluoric acid can enter.

In addition to the antenna seal, the sealing of the host is also crucial. If there is a leak, hydrofluoric acid may penetrate into the inside of the host through the shell or other parts, causing corrosion of the circuit board. When ordering and installing a corrosion-resistant radar level gauge, be sure to emphasize the anti-corrosion requirements and ensure that the external seal is intact.

One of the characteristics of hydrofluoric acid is its extremely strong corrosiveness, and another is that it may reach a high temperature of 150°C to 180°C in chemical production. This is beyond the working range of standard corrosion-resistant radar level gauges, so it is necessary to consider choosing a high-temperature radar level gauge. However, the temperature of hydrofluoric acid may vary under different working conditions, and the appropriate model should be selected according to the specific situation.

The corrosiveness of hydrofluoric acid not only damages the instrument, but is also harmful to the human body. It is said that hydrofluoric acid is highly irritating and corrosive to human skin, and ingestion of about 1.5 grams can be fatal. Therefore, in order to ensure the safety of relevant personnel, many companies are fully implementing automation measures.
