Coal-fired Power Plants: Level Sensors Solve The Problem Of Coal Bunker Pollution

Xinhai Power Plant's 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant is located in Jiangsu Province and has been operational since 2017. To ensure continuous feeding into the combustion chamber, the reliable Pulse radar level sensor is used to continuously measure the coal combustion.

The supply of coal is critical to the operation of power plants, and even advanced power plants require a stable supply of coal. The coal is transported to the power plant and then unloaded into storage rooms up to 30 meters high. Coal is transported from the stockpile area to storage rooms via an above-ground or underground conveyor belt system. The coal is then processed through a grinder into a fine powder for combustion in a burner. However, the harsh environmental conditions of coal bunkers pose challenges for sensors – contamination is inevitable. People have been looking for a solution to reliably indicate coal bunker height and inventory levels, but have encountered difficulties. Sensors often display abnormal values even when this is not the case. This situation creates numerous problems, including a dirty environment, noise interference, and solid material distribution characteristics.

To address these challenges, SOLIDAT recommends the SLDL5285 Pulse radar level sensor with a measurement frequency of 80 GHz. The coal bunker radar sensor is heat and chemical resistant and performs well in dusty, dirty environments. The SLDL5285 has a measurement range of up to 120 meters and an accuracy of up to ±5 mm, allowing it to work normally even in complex environments.
